    Travel safely

    • Please bear in mind that the following conducts are FORBIDDEN in Spanish territory:
      • Drinking alcoholic drinks under the age of 18.
      • Possessing or using drugs in public spaces or public transport, as well as throwing around the materials used for it.
      • Smoking in closed public spaces, such as healthcare facilities, shopping centres, bars, restaurants, cafés, grocery shops, bus, train or metro stations, seaports, airports, urban and commuter transport, hotels and hostels, theatres, cinemas and sports facilities. However, smoking is allowed in outdoor areas, except for playgrounds or the surroundings of healthcare facilities.
      • Disrupting public order or blocking access and passage by any means in public spaces.
      • Causing severe damage to street furniture (bus stops, litter bins, recycling bins, etc.).
      • Driving barefoot or with shoes that may make driving dangerous (flip-flops, high heels...) or without clothes that cover your upper body.
      • Camping, parking or driving on the beach.
    • Please remember that it is MANDATORY:
      • To show your passport or ID to Spanish National Police officers or other law-enforcement officers when asked to do so, as well as complying with their orders and requests.
    • The following conducts may be SANCTIONED BY LAW:
      • Drinking alcoholic beverages in public areas.
      • Public urination and defecation.
      • Making noise that disturbs public order or neighbours sleeping, or disrupts the activities carried out by local citizens.
      • Naturism on beaches, except in those where it is permitted by the local city council.
      • Littering the street or throwing rubbish outside of recycling/litter bins.
      • Possessing or using drugs in public spaces.
      • Driving people to help them get access to illegal drugs.
      • Requesting or accepting sexual services in exchange for money in public areas.
      • Damaging public or private buildings or real estate.
    • The following could be indicators of SWINDLING:
      • Offers or prices that are substantially lower than the original value of a product.
      • Products sold through street trading.

      • Remember to do it yourself; do not let someone else take your card for payment.
      • Double check the amount on the payment terminal before paying.
    • Regarding ATMs:
      • At ATMs, look around before making a transaction.
      • Be suspicious if someone gets too close to you.

    To ensure your safety, REMEMBER: not to publish your holiday plans on social media.

    Tourist passport

    • You must have on you some form of official ID document at all times. To check in at your accommodation, such as a hotel or tourist apartment, you must show one of the following original documents: passport, ID document or card, valid residence permit in Spain (for foreign nationals living in the country).
    • What to do if your documents get lost or stolen?
      • Reach your embassy or consulate immediately to learn about how to proceed.
      • If you wish to remain in Spain or to continue travelling, you must get a new passport at the consulate as soon as possible.
      • If you plan to return to your home country, you have to request a safe-conduct.
    • You may be sanctioned if you commit any of the following acts:
      • Disrespecting law enforcement agents.
      • Disobeying or resisting law enforcement officers, which could even be a crime in serious cases.
      • Hindering or stopping the actions of the emergency services, be it by acting against them or by refusing to cooperate with them.
    • Driving licences from EU countries and member states of the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) are valid in Spain. If you come from a different country, you need an international driving licence, which is valid for one year.
    • In Spain, vehicles drive on the right side, and seatbelts must fastened while driving on any kind of road.
    • Please observe the speed limit.
    • Driving barefoot or with shoes that do not guarantee proper pedal control is forbidden.

    In public places

    • Be careful with your belongings in crowded places (markets, shows, beaches, swimming pools, etc.).
    • Keep your rucksack or handbag closed and in front of you.
    • Avoid showing large sums of money or luxury items such as watches or jewellery.
    • Avoid gambling on public streets - it is often a scam.
    • Be wary of sudden assistance from strangers (stains on clothes, broken down car, etc.).
    • At ATMs, look around before making a transaction. Try to use indoor ATMs and be suspicious if someone approaches you under any pretext.
    • Do not use public Wi-Fi networks to make online payments or purchases.
    • If you are on a terrace, avoid leaving your mobile phone on the table and do not leave your bag or rucksack hanging from a chair.

    In a hotel or flat

    • Do not leave money or valuables in plain sight. If possible, use the hotel safety deposit boxes.
    • In public areas, keep an eye on your luggage and personal belongings, especially when checking in.

    In your vehicle

    • While travelling to your holiday destination, take extra precautions with your vehicle and belongings, and be wary of requests from strangers. Remember to call 091 in case of emergency.
    • Avoid leaving valuables in plain sight or in the vehicle and use the boot to store your belongings out of the view of others.
    • When parking your car, try to choose the busiest and best-lit spaces.

    If you are using public transport

    • Label your baggage before you check it in.
    • Do not check in luggage of unknown persons in your name.
    • Avoid travelling with large sums of money on you.
    • Do not entrust your luggage to persons who are not duly identified.
    • When travelling by train or bus, keep an eye on your luggage, especially at intermediate stops.

    On the beach

    • Carry only the essentials and keep an eye on your belongings at all times.
    • If you are with children, keep them in sight and under control at all times.
    • The waving flag indicates the state of the sea, so be careful when swimming, even if it is permitted and the conditions are suitable.

    Regarding your itinerary

    • Try not to travel alone and, in any case, make sure you let an acquaintance know about your itinerary and travel schedule.
    • Always have your ID with you.
    • Plan ahead your itinerary and check the weather conditions.
    • Carry a backpack with the appropriate material for the activities that you have in mind.

    Where to report

    • At a police station.
    • On the internet: www.policia.es
    • At a SATE (Foreign Tourist Assistance Service) office. SATEs are police offices where tourists can receive personalised, comprehensive and complete assistance from a team of Spanish National Police officers and interpreters in their own language.
    • You will need the following documents to report a crime:
      • ID documents, if you have any. In the event of a theft, a list of all the belongings that have been stolen with their serial number or IMEI number in the case of mobile phones.
    • What to do in case a person goes missing?
      • First of all, do a quick search in the surrounding area. If the person does not show up, call 091 and report the case. There is no time limit to report a missing person.
